We’ve made it to sunny Spain! We’ve spent a week getting here, including 4 days of great riding along the way! I’ve uploaded some pictures to our gallery of the trip so far. Or you can keep reading for the full version of events so far.Day 1
We finally left Morzine on Saturday afternoon, after stuffing the van full of kit for our road trip through France, Spain and finally to Morocco.
A brief (well, one hour long) stop in Vieux Campeur for a big sleeping bag for Sara and we were on our way properly. First stop Provence. The Hautes Alpes de Provence in the Drome region to be precise.
Days 2 and 3 in Provence
We’re staying in the foothills of the Alps, with Avignon to the south west. The weather is great and most importantly, the trails are dry, dusty, rocky, thin, un-used and all ours. The peaks around here go up to around 1000m – with the valleys at 200-300m, so there’s plenty of descending (and climbing) to be had – it’s just a shame we can’t spend all our two months exploring aournd here!
Day 4 south to Salagou
After watching a bit of Evermore (the MTB DVD) and spotting Anne Caro’s bit “in the hills above Montpellier” we had to pay a visit. The place is a mini Moab: with slickrock around, and plenty of strange, iron rich, red dirt. Unfortunately it was raining, so we couldn’t make the most of it – another time perhaps.
Days 5, 6 & 7 in the Pyrenees
We were kindly invited to stay with Joe (a Morzine based MTB instructor/guide) at his mum’s Gite in a little place called Eyne. Whilst Joe’s mum cooked up some great food (three courses for lunch AND dinner!) – Joe showed us around his home patch on the bikes. There’s some really great riding to be had around there, and with the highest non funicular train station being his home station, we could ride the valley and get the train back up!
Day 8 Barcelona:
A deserved day off the bikes with a day trip around the sights of the city. A great place, but my legs are aching more after tramping about the place for the day than they were after riding up mountains! We’ll be heading south again tomorrow – and hopefully back on the bikes some time soon!
